Lighting and Disposal

WARNING

DO NOT use flammable liquids, fire accelerant, lighter fluid or gas log lighters to ignite Pine Mountain firelogs or Java-Log firelogs.

Step 1: Adjust Wrapper

Gently loosen the wrapper around the firelog being careful not to tear the paper. Place only one firelog on the   grate near the back with the brand logo facing the living space (room) and the wrapper seam pointing up toward the flue (chimney).

Step 2: Check Air Flow

Position the damper to full open position. Ensure there is an updraft before lighting the firelog. To check for an updraft tightly twist the corner of a newspaper. Hold the twisted paper near the flue (chimney) and light the free end of the paper. Keep the burning paper near the flue (chimney) long enough to see if smoke is drawn upwards and out the flue (chimney).

NOTE: Pine Mountain and Java-Log firelogs do not require special ventilation when used under recommended conditions.

Step 3: Light Firelog

After determining there is an updraft in the flue (chimney), proceed to light the firelog. Set the firelog on the grate near the rear so that the brand logo is facing the living space (room). Ensure the wrapper seam is pointing up towards the flue (chimney). Use a match or lighter to light the wrapper seam at each designated point marked with an arrow.

Step 4: Close Screen

Embers from the burning firelog will make a characteristic popping sound as moisture is released from the wood. Most embers will be drawn out of the flue (chimney) but there is a chance some can be ejected from the fire burning appliance. To prevent property damage and fire from hot embers escaping the appliance, keep a metal mesh screen in the closed position in front of the burning fire at all times.

CAUTION: Do not leave the room unattended until ashes are removed from the fire burning appliance and properly disposed of outdoors. Adult supervision is required when children, persons needing assistance, and animals are present.

Step 5: Post Burn

After the firelog burns out, leave the damper open until ashes and bits of firelog are no longer glowing or smoking. Never leave post-fire ashes or firelog remnants unattended. Only after they are completely cooled is it safe to remove them from the fire burning appliance, Put ashes in a metal can, close the lid and immediately move the can outdoors.

CAUTION: Do not leave the room unattended until ashes are removed from the fire burning appliance and properly disposed of outdoors. Adult supervision is required when children, persons needing assistance, and animals are present.

Step 6: Disposal

Ashes from Pine Mountain and Java-Log firelogs are non-hazardous waste and can be disposed of with normal household refuse in most states. Check your state and local ordinances to confirm the best disposal method for your area.

NOTE: Ashes from spent Pine Mountain and Java-Log firelogs that have gone cold are safe to incorporate into the soil in your outdoors garden - if in compliance with local ordinances.
